Kimber Simpkins interviews Nishanga Bliss

Nishanga Bliss, MS, Ph.D. L.Ac., is the author of Real Food All Year and has been a practitioner in the holistic health field for over 20 years. She is an acupuncturist, herbalist, integrative nutritionist, and professor of Chinese medicine at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, where she grows, cooks, ferments, teaches, and writes about sustainable food…

K: Why did you take your interest in nutrition in the direction of being sensitive to pleasure and seeing its importance instead of the way everyone else was going?

N: Well … I’m just a hedonist! [Laughter.] I already thought pleasure was really important. If I didn’t get my doctorate in nutrition I would have gotten it in sexology. I’ve heard from people who can literally have an orgasm from what they were eating. There are people who find more pleasure in food than others, and I wanted to study them. I call them “pleasure superheroes.”
